libations

A libation is  bit of wine or other liqued given as an offering to the gods.  In this case Trollope uses the word somewhat mockingly to mean brandy, which is Sir Louis’ drink of choice.  [JC 2005]

alpha and omega

Dr. Thorne cannot imagine a marriage between Mary and Louis Scatcherd; he thinks the two are as disparate as a lamb and a wolf or an alpha and an omega, the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet.  [JC 2005]
